Hi, I’m Tunya!
I’m a biomedical illustrator and animator based in Toronto, Canada, specializing in creating compelling and accessible visual solutions for scientific communication. With a background in Biology and Medical Science from Western University and advanced training in the MScBMC (Biomedical Communications) program at the University of Toronto, I combine scientific expertise with creative design to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
My journey into the field has not always been so straightforward, though. I was only introduced to science communication during an elective placement in Thailand, where I was shadowing nurses and doctors to hopefully become a doctor one day. While there, I developed an infographic on stroke awareness to educate local communities. This made me realize the profound and direct impact that art could have on patients and public health. Since then, I have collaborated with researchers and companies to produce educational graphics, scientific figures, and animations, including my capstone project on continuum robots in partnership with Dr. Jessica Burgner-Kahrs. I’m passionate about creating 2D/3D visuals that empower researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals while making science accessible to diverse audiences. Through my work, I aim to connect people with knowledge in ways that inspire understanding and innovation.
Outside of work, I’m a naturalist who loves exploring new ecosystems, foraging for wild foods, and gardening. I also enjoy singing, staying active at the gym, and experimenting in the kitchen. As someone passionate about cooking, discovering new cuisines, and savoring great meals, I believe food serves as a universal language that connects us all.
