Suture Sequence

An instructional guide to suturing and tying a surgeon’s knot

This basic but clean instructional guide can be used as a step-by-step guide on the process of suturing. Observation of the process, detailed notes and sketches, and a physical maquette were involved in creating this piece. The sketches were made on paper and in procreate, and the final rendering was done in Adobe photoshop, with figure captions added in Adobe Illustrator.

Roles: Research, Sketching, Layout design, Rendering

Audience: Surgeons, medical students

Clients: Professor Michael Corrin (Biomedical Communications Professor, University of Toronto)

Communication Objective: Create an instructional guide using the least steps to show the suturing and surgeon’s knot process.

Medium: Web, Digital, Print

Software: Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Observation and notetaking

At the start of this project, I was given the opportunity to watch sutures being created in the exact manner that I would be required to depict. In my haste, I created these sketches and notes to capture the steps and attempt to consolidate my ideas into something coherent.

More refined sketches were made, and figure captions were included.

The final renders were created, and everything was compiled in Illustrator!

Sketches

Next, I had to decide which steps were the most crucial to understanding the process, without any extraneous information or imagery.
